The American Goldfinch is a migratory bird native to North America. The male is a vibrant yellow during the summer breeding months and olive colored during the winter. The females are a dull yellow-brown color that brightens only slightly during the summer. Feeding almost exclusively on seeds their beaks have a conical shape which is perfectly adapted to removing seeds from the seedhead. Although migratory they travel a relatively short distance, spending the summer months throughout North America moving south through the United States and parts of Mexico as the weather cools.
