Rainbow Lorikeet
Trichoglossus moluccanus

The Rainbow Lorikeet is a species of Parrot found in Australia. They are a medium sizes parrot typically between 25-30cm in length, including the tail. They are bright and colourful, the head is a deep blue with a greenish-yellow collar, the wings back and tail are green. The chest is orange/yellow and belly a deep blue. They feed mainly on fruit, pollen and nectar and possess a tongue specifically adapted to their diet. They are important pollinators for native flowering plants. The breeding season varies by region and they typically lay a batch of two eggs. The mother incubates the eggs and both parents feed the chicks. They are monogamous and mate for life, typically living between 15-20 years in the wild.

  1. Male and Female Rainbow Lorikeets are identical, only through observing which bird lays the eggs can the sex be determined.
  2. Their tongue looks like a brush and is specially adapted to gather pollen and drops of nectar as efficiently as possible.
  3. Rainbow Lorikeets are the most common type of lorikeet in Australia. They lack many natural predators in the wild and have adapted to live alongside the human population
